DEI conducts R&D and specialized testing in its state-of-the-art laboratory facility. This work is an important complement to its engineering analysis and technical consulting services, and allows DEI to offer comprehensive turn-key solutions to complex engineering problems.

    DEI develops specialized processes and equipment to meet the evolving needs of the energy industry. Following conception and engineering analysis, prototyping and qualification performed in DEI’s laboratory facility is an important phase of the overall innovation process.

  • Supporting Innovation

    DEI holds more than 20 patents for technologies ranging from specialty chemical cleaning processes to devices for filtration and leak detection. DEI recently received an R&D100 award for the development of a novel system for cleaning nuclear fuel assemblies using ultrasonic energy.

Instrumentation

DEI develops custom instrumentation solutions for advanced testing programs.

DEI maintains a variety of autoclave facilities and test loops, and also routinely designs custom test facilities to support evaluation of customer-specific issues. Robust engineering analysis and test design is the foundation and signature of all DEI test programs. Results-effective test parameters are identified, analyzed and controlled in well-conceived test plans, and experienced engineers actively participate in all phases of testing, including test execution. Results are transmitted in clearly written technical reports. Example testing services include:

  • Corrosion, erosion, vibration and wear testing
  • Material degradation studies in power plant environments, including normal operation and accident conditions (stress corrosion cracking studies, slow strain rate testing, reliability assessments under simulated LOCA conditions, etc.)
  • Component testing for new plant designs (advanced PWRs, small modular reactors, etc.)
  • Corrosion product transport and deposition studies

Root Cause & Failure Analysis

DEI offers a full spectrum of expert root cause / failure analysis services including engineering analysis of complex thermal / hydraulic systems and structural analysis of failed components using finite element analysis modeling (ANSYS). DEI also performs in-house metallurgical examinations to assist clients in the identification of contributing factors in component failures and possible compensatory measures.
